The vaccine which is being used currently for TB has been in circulation for close to a century and has one big flaw. The vaccine known as BCG vaccine is helpful for kids but not for adults. That is the biggest reason why the disease Tuberculosis is presently the deadliest infectious disease in the world and claims 1.6 million lives in one year. However, the news of a vaccine which as per reports is going to be a breakthrough moment in the fight against the deadly disease has been termed as a game changer. In a trial which involved over 3500 adults in the parts of African countries which were hard hit by the disease, the researchers have discovered that the vaccine was able to protect close to half of them. The vaccine is being made by the company GlaxoSmithKline and is now being studied further. The results of the tests have been published in the journal known as New England Journal of Medicine.
In the world of vaccines a 50 % success rate is considered to be relatively, but considering the magnitude of the disease even this figure might mean that the vaccine might be able to save millions of lives. All of the subjects who had been tested had the disease in a dormant form. Half of the group which participated got the vaccine in the form of two shots, a month apart from each other and 13 of the people went on to develop the disease. The other half had got a placebo and 26 of them had developed the disease.
Experts believe that in a likely situation of the trials holding up, the vaccine can potentially revolutionize the treatment of the disease.
